The New York Times reported on Monday that Congressional Republicans were prepared on Monday to “scale back” First Lady Michelle Obama’s school-lunch nutrition mandates, as well as curtail some clean water regulations in a spending bill that would avert a government shutdown this week. The proposed bill would require numerous policy concessions from Democrats.

The First Lady has been a champion of healthier school lunches, and has frequently found herself pitted against GOP members of Congress. Some complain that the stepped-up nutrition requirements are presenting a hardship for school lunch providers, because of the cost and lack of availability of some of the foods -including whole grains – required by the program.
